Can we get... (k)inky?

Come closer... Closer... A little closer... Lemme whisper a little something in your ear.

Truth is... I'm... (ahem) a "kinky chic"... And, I hope you like it rough and wild, because I do. It's a turn-on of mine.

Rough...

Kinky...

Wild...

… HAIR!!!

I am most certainly talking HAIR, ya big pervs!!! And, if you thought this post was heading in another direction - thanks for letting me know I'm not the only perv in the blogosphere;)

Now, back to the topic at hand: my obsession with “kinkiness”. Well, to be more specific - my love of kinky hair, man buns and oh... plentiful beards. That's right... There's just something about a man with some untamed beauty in his mane and facial hair that makes me... umm... (let's just insert a cutesy lip-bite here, shall we?).

With the NBA season now back in full swing, I'm starting to see numerous players embrace their "kinky" side. Many of them are growing out their natural manes into the most beautiful and imperfect kinky crowns, while others are opting for the increasingly-popular "man bun". One needs to look no further than my favourite NBA team to see that male hair game is real! Chicago Bulls guards, Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose, are proudly sporting their new school, high top fades - complete with natural kinks; and one of my favourite centres, Joakim Noah has been fearlessly rocking his beautiful man bun for quite some time now. He may have the free throw skills of a small, uncoordinated child, but ladies & gents - that man's bun game is unparalleled! He can go from a neatly-pulled top knot to a low-hanging swag bun, all within the same quarter. It's really quite a joy to watch :)

Outside of the Bulls, we've got players like James “Fear the Beard” Harden, Tyson Chandler, and Chris Andersen representing for the bold and boisterous "BEARDGANG", opting to patiently grow and carefully maintain their thick, statement facial hair. And then there are my loc-baes like Kenneth Faried and Jae Crowder, who take to the court night after night, with their long, knotted locs neatly tied back and in full swing.

As a woman who enjoys watching the game of basketball, all of these hairscapades only add another level of entertainment to the game. I’m always keeping an eye out to see who’s sporting an exciting look on the court.

Beyond the realm of sports, more and more male members of the music and film industry are also joining the kinky/natural hair movement. Popular rappers like J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar have recently embraced their kinks – now giving us a more rugged and raw appeal (which seems to complement the unabashed lyrical content of their latest musical offerings). Triple-threats “Les Twins” (a twin-duo from France, who dance, choreograph and model) have been wearing their lion-like manes for years now. I would even go so far as to say that their ‘fros’ have essentially become an integral and expected part of their performances. And, who could forget beloved loc'd actors like Malcolm Jamal Warner (aka Theo, from the Cosy Show), Jason Momoa (see Game of Thrones) and Gary Dourdan (aka Shazah from A Different World)... All gorgeous in their respective rights (though they’ve all since shorn their beautifully knotted locs, for respective reasons).

In a world that can often seem quite hmm... vanilla to me, I find it incredibly refreshing to see these movements of bolder, more "rooted" (pun intended) hair choices starting to rise up among the male community. While the natural hair movement has been gaining steady momentum for years now among females, it honestly warms my heart to see that men are joining the cause and making a statement, pushing for more self-acceptance and self-love among people of all colours and cultures. It’s a far cry from 2007, when MSNBC’s Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos", isn't it?

Being a self-proclaimed naturalista and, more recently, a "loc rocker" myself - not only do I identify with the need to push for self-acceptance, but I find myself quite attracted and drawn to men who display some of that same vibe. This is not to say that I dig completely unkempt men. Not by any means! In fact, I very much appreciate a man who keeps himself well-groomed and looking fresh. However, on the other side of the coin - a man who displays a hint of untamed, dishevelled je ne sais quoi, might get my eyes to linger on them a little longer. To me, it portrays a certain edge... a sense of “bucking against the system”, which resonates with me. See - while I do work in a “corporate type” capacity on a daily basis - I still tend to push the envelope and exude a style that says "I’m put together but lowkey non-conformist".

Time and time again, I've heard that there's nothing quite sexier than a man in a well-tailored suit.

Hmmm. Well, let's just say - if one were to put any of the specimens below in a Tom Ford three-piece…

... I'd certainly be inclined to agree.

And, for those out there who can’t see the beauty in kinky locs, man-buns or gloriously man-scaped beards, I would kindly invite you to... (ahem) suck my KINK!
